Preparing Young People for Their First Jobs: Summer Youth Employment Programs

Leadership Case Study

Two public summer youth employment programs, one city and one county, needed young participants ready to succeed on the job. The engagements delivered work readiness training and a full summer employment program with exposure to high-demand careers.

Leadership experience. This engagement was delivered by a Washington, DC-based management consulting firm where Altus's founder previously served in executive leadership. We share it to show the experience our leadership brings. It is not presented as Altus Workforce Solutions contract performance. Client details are anonymized.

The challenge

Summer youth employment programs give many young people their first paid work experience. Participants who arrive without basic job search skills, career awareness or financial literacy are less likely to succeed on the job or move into unsubsidized employment afterward.

The approach

  • City program, 2019 to 2023. Delivered one-week professional development training before participants started their summer placements, covering job search skills, career exploration and financial literacy.
  • County program, 2022 to 2023. Delivered a summer youth employment program that combined short-term job placements with training and exposure to public and private sector industries, livable-wage occupations and high-demand career pathways in the county.

Why it matters for Altus clients

Preparation before placement changes what young people get out of a summer job. Altus's youth programs build on this experience, combining work readiness, career exposure and hands-on project management of the operational details that keep participants engaged.
