Creativity: Thinking Outside the Box

Personal techniques to break mental ruts and generate fresh ideas

Why It Matters

Experience is valuable, but it also builds ruts. People repeat the approach that worked last time, dismiss ideas that sound odd, or censor themselves before they speak. Over time, roles that need fresh thinking, such as outreach, program design, or service improvement, settle for the familiar. Individuals who know how to loosen their own assumptions contribute more original options, and organizations get more raw material to work with when change demands it.

Course Description

This is a hands-on session focused on the individual thinker. Participants first notice their own patterns through quick puzzles and prompts that expose common blocks: functional fixedness, fear of looking foolish, premature judgment, and the one-right-answer habit. They then practice a toolkit of techniques in short rounds: assumption reversal, random word and image association, perspective shifts, SCAMPER-style questioning, and deliberate constraints. Each technique is applied to an everyday work challenge participants choose. Reflection after each round helps people see which methods fit how they think. Participants finish by building a personal idea routine, including how to capture ideas and when to reach for each technique in their own work.

Key Focus Areas

Participants explore and practice:

  • Recognizing personal mental blocks and habitual thinking patterns

  • Assumption reversal and challenging how a problem is stated

  • Random association and forced connections to spark new combinations

  • Using deliberate constraints and perspective shifts to generate options

  • Building a personal routine for capturing and developing ideas

Learning Outcomes

Participants will be able to:

  • Identify the mental blocks that most often limit their own thinking

  • Apply at least three idea-generation techniques to a real work challenge

  • Generate a broad set of options before judging any of them

  • Create a personal routine for capturing and revisiting ideas

Who Should Attend
