Delivering Constructive Feedback
Give corrective feedback that changes behavior and keeps trust intact
Why It Matters
Avoided feedback does not go away. The problem continues, coworkers notice nothing is happening, and the eventual conversation becomes harsher than it needed to be. Delivered poorly, feedback triggers defensiveness and damages the working relationship. Leaders who give clear, timely, respectful correction keep small issues small. Teams learn that standards are real and applied fairly, and employees get the information they need to improve before it shows up in a formal review.
Course Description
Participants open by naming a piece of feedback they have been putting off, and that real situation anchors the session. They learn a simple structure for describing behavior and impact without labels or guesses about motive, then rewrite vague statements into specific ones. Most of the time goes to practice. In pairs and trios, participants deliver feedback and receive coaching on wording and tone, then repeat the conversation as the receiver pushes back, gets upset, or goes quiet. Discussion covers timing, setting, and when feedback belongs in writing. The session ends with each person scripting the opening of their real conversation and setting a date to have it and debrief afterward.
