Conducting Annual Employee Reviews
Prepare for and run the annual review conversation with confidence
Why It Matters
Annual reviews often feed pay, promotion, and development decisions, yet many managers write them the night before from memory. The result is vague comments, ratings skewed by recent events, and meetings that leave employees surprised or defensive. A well-run review does the opposite. It gives the employee a clear, documented picture of the year and a shared plan for the next one, and it gives the organization records it can rely on.
Course Description
The course follows the review cycle in order, from preparation to the meeting to follow-up. Participants gather and organize evidence for a sample employee, then write ratings and narrative comments and swap drafts for peer feedback on clarity, fairness, and tone. A short segment covers common rating errors, such as recency, halo effects, and leniency, with practice spotting them in sample reviews. The core of the session is a set of role plays: a strong performer expecting more, an employee who disagrees with a rating, and a review that has to address a performance gap. Participants close by drafting goals for the coming year and a preparation plan for their next review season.
