Why It Matters

Command-and-control styles can get short-term compliance, but they rarely build commitment, and they tend to wear people out. Servant leadership puts the growth and wellbeing of the team first, on the belief that people who are supported do better work. It is not about being soft. Servant leaders still set high standards and make hard decisions. Teams led this way tend to trust more and stay longer, and the organization gains leaders who develop more leaders.

Course Description

Participants begin by examining the core ideas behind servant leadership, including listening, stewardship, and commitment to others' growth, and comparing them with leadership styles they have experienced. Discussion tackles common misreadings, such as confusing service with saying yes to everything or avoiding accountability. Participants then assess their own leadership against servant leadership practices and identify gaps. Practice segments cover listening to understand, asking team members what gets in their way, and removing an obstacle. Small groups work through scenarios where serving the team conflicts with organizational demands. Each participant leaves with a few daily practices to try and a plan to ask their team for feedback on whether anything changed.
