Why It Matters

Low motivation shows up as missed effort, rising absences, and good people quietly searching for other jobs. Managers often respond with rewards that do not match the problem, or they assume the person simply does not care. Most of the time, the cause is something a manager can influence: unclear purpose, little control over the work, no sense of progress, or a strained relationship. Understanding those drivers helps managers keep people engaged and helps organizations hold on to talent.

Course Description

Participants begin by reflecting on their own best and worst periods at work and what made the difference, which grounds the ideas in experience. The course introduces a practical set of motivation drivers, including purpose, autonomy, growth, recognition, fairness, and belonging. Using case profiles, small groups diagnose why each employee has disengaged and propose responses, then compare answers. Participants practice a stay conversation, asking team members what keeps them and what might push them away. Discussion addresses what managers cannot control, such as pay scales, and how to work within those limits honestly. Each person maps the drivers for their own team and commits to two actions, with a date to review results.
