Why It Matters

Many capable employees stay quiet in meetings, accept unrealistic deadlines, or let frustration build until it comes out sideways. Others push so hard that colleagues stop listening. Both patterns cost something: ideas go unheard, workloads become uneven, and small problems grow. When people can speak up directly and respectfully, teams surface issues earlier, decisions improve, and individuals feel more in control of their own work and career.

Course Description

Assertiveness is treated as a learnable set of behaviors, not a personality trait. Participants start by noticing their own default response under pressure and the situations that trigger it. From there, they work through common workplace moments: declining an extra assignment, disagreeing with a peer, asking for resources, and responding to criticism. Short scripts give structure, and paired role plays let people try new phrasing, hear feedback on tone and word choice, and try again. Discussion addresses the self-talk that undermines confidence and practical ways to reframe it. Each participant leaves with one real conversation they plan to have, the words they intend to use, and a way to check in afterward on how it went. Scenarios can be adjusted to fit frontline, professional, or supervisory roles.

Key Focus Areas

Participants explore and practice:

  • Assertive, passive, aggressive, and passive-aggressive patterns compared

  • Using "I" statements to express needs and concerns

  • Saying no and setting boundaries without over-explaining

  • Disagreeing respectfully with peers and supervisors

  • Reframing self-doubt and negative self-talk before key conversations

  • Holding steady when others push back
