Budgets and Financial Reports
Read the numbers and make better budget decisions
Why It Matters
Managers and program leads are routinely handed budget responsibility without finance training. They may approve spending against a line they do not fully understand, miss an underspend that will cost grant funds, or struggle to defend a request. When non-finance staff can read the reports, conversations with finance get shorter and better, overruns are caught earlier, and the organization makes spending decisions with fewer surprises at year end.
Course Description
Participants work with a realistic set of reports for a fictional program: an annual budget, a monthly income statement, and a budget-versus-actual report. In small groups they identify the largest variances, separate timing differences from real problems, and decide what questions to bring to finance. A second exercise has participants build a simple program budget from assumptions, including personnel, direct costs, and indirect rates, then defend it in a short mock review. Discussion addresses forecasting through year end, reallocating funds, and how financial reports differ between businesses, nonprofits, and government programs. Participants close by listing the reports they receive at work and planning a monthly review routine they can keep.
