STRATEGY & PROBLEM SOLVING
Business Acumen
See how everyday decisions shape results and mission
Why It Matters
Strong performers often move into roles where they must make trade-offs they were never asked to see: a discount that hurts margin, a hire that strains a grant, a process change that shifts work to another unit. Without a view of the whole organization, good intentions produce costly side effects. Business acumen helps people connect daily choices to financial health, customer value, and mission impact, which makes them better partners to leadership.
Course Description
The course opens with a simple question: how does this organization actually succeed? Participants map the value chain for their own employer or a case organization, tracing how resources turn into products, services, or community outcomes. They then connect key financial ideas, such as revenue sources, margin, cash flow, and cost drivers, to everyday decisions. A business simulation asks teams to run a fictional organization over several rounds, making choices about pricing, staffing, and investment and watching how results ripple. Debriefs tie the simulation back to real work. Participants finish by identifying two decisions in their own role where a broader view would change the answer, and planning how to act on them.
