COMMUNICATION & INTERPERSONAL SKILLS
Collaborative Business Writing
Produce shared documents that read as if one author wrote them
Why It Matters
Grant applications, policy documents, board reports, and project deliverables are rarely written by one person. Without a shared process, teams lose time reconciling conflicting edits, debating style late in the process, and hunting for the latest version. Reviewers repeat each other's comments or contradict them. Organizations that write well together submit on time, present a unified message to funders and clients, and spend less energy on avoidable friction between contributors.
Course Description
Where individual writing courses focus on the sentence, this one focuses on the team's workflow. Participants map how their group currently produces a shared document and pinpoint where it breaks down. They then design a better approach: assigning section owners, agreeing on a style sheet, setting naming and version conventions, and scheduling review rounds with clear roles. In a practice exercise, small teams co-author a short document under realistic constraints, then compare results. Participants also practice writing comments that are specific and actionable, and resolving conflicting feedback without endless back-and-forth. The course closes with each team drafting a simple writing protocol to use on its next shared deliverable and revisit once that deliverable is complete.
