Build professional relationships beyond your organization's walls

Why It Matters

Jobs, partnerships, referrals, and new ideas often come from people outside your current workplace. Yet many professionals only network when they urgently need something, which feels awkward and rarely works. A steady external network brings market insight, career options, and allies. Organizations benefit when staff build relationships with peers, partners, and community stakeholders who can open doors to collaboration, talent, and new opportunities.

Course Description

This course looks outward. Participants map their current external network and identify gaps, such as industries, sectors, or roles they rarely reach. They then build a plan: which professional associations, chambers, alumni groups, conferences, and online communities fit their goals. Practice rounds simulate a networking event, from joining a conversation already in progress to exiting gracefully, with a short self-introduction as the opener. A follow-up segment covers personalized messages, informational interview requests, and offering value before asking for help. Participants also set up a simple system for keeping in touch. Emerging talent groups can focus on informational interviews and career exploration, while experienced professionals can focus on partnerships and business development. Each person commits to one event and three follow-ups.
