Internal Networking
Build cross-department relationships and visibility inside your organization
Why It Matters
Employees who only know their own team struggle when work crosses boundaries. Requests stall, news of changes arrives late, and contributions go unnoticed by the leaders who decide on promotions and assignments. Internal relationships make information flow faster and collaboration smoother. For organizations, cross-department connections break down silos, speed up problem solving, and help retain people who can see a future for themselves internally.
Course Description
Unlike external networking, the focus here is the people already inside your organization. Participants map the organization as it actually works: who influences decisions, which teams depend on theirs, and where they have no connection at all. They then plan low-key ways to build relationships, such as joining cross-functional projects, scheduling short introductory conversations, volunteering for committees, and sharing useful information. A visibility segment addresses making contributions known without self-promotion that alienates peers, including how to give useful updates to senior leaders. Discussion covers mentoring and sponsorship, and the difference between them. Scenario practice helps with introductions to senior leaders and reconnecting with dormant contacts. Each participant names three internal relationships to build and a first step for each.
