Why It Matters

Managers who say they stay out of politics often find their teams losing resources, credit, or projects to units with better-connected leaders. Others play the game too hard and lose trust. Organizational politics is simply how decisions get made outside the org chart. Managers who understand it can advocate for their teams, get their work seen, and stay clear of damaging conflicts, all without compromising their integrity. Their staff, in turn, can focus on the work instead of the friction.

Course Description

Politics is treated here as a reality to understand rather than a game to win. Participants map the informal power in their own organization: who influences decisions, who controls information, and where alliances lie. Discussion separates ethical political skill, such as building relationships and timing proposals well, from tactics that erode trust. Scenarios cover situations managers face, such as a peer taking credit for the team's work, a senior leader's pet project competing for resources, or being pressed to take sides in a feud. Participants practice responses in pairs and receive feedback. A segment on protecting the team covers buffering staff from conflict while staying honest with them. Each manager leaves with an informal power map and one relationship to build.
