Middle Manager Essentials

Translate strategy into action between senior leaders and frontline teams

Why It Matters

Strategy usually fails in the middle. Senior leaders set direction, frontline staff do the work, and middle managers are left to connect the two, often with unclear authority and competing demands. When that link is weak, priorities shift without explanation, teams lose trust, and leaders never hear what is really happening on the ground. Strong middle managers make strategy workable. They give their teams context, give leaders honest information, and keep the organization moving in one direction.

Course Description

Two directions organize the course, because a middle manager always faces both. Looking down, participants take a sample strategic priority and translate it into team goals, then practice explaining a decision they did not make and may not fully agree with. Looking up, they practice framing frontline concerns as clear, evidence-based input that senior leaders can act on. A segment on lateral work covers coordinating with peer managers who compete for the same resources. Scenarios explore being caught in the middle: conflicting directives, a team pushing back on a change, and a leader asking for unrealistic timelines. Participants leave with a plan for one priority they need to translate and one message they need to carry upward.
