Human Resource Management
A practical grounding in core HR functions for small organizations
Why It Matters
In small organizations, HR often lands on an office manager, an executive director, or a program lead who never trained for it. Without a clear picture of what HR covers, important pieces slip: policies go stale, records are incomplete, and employee concerns are handled inconsistently. A solid grounding helps people in these roles cover the basics, spot risk early, and know when an issue needs outside expertise. The organization gains a more stable foundation for its staff.
Course Description
Think of the course as a broad orientation rather than a deep dive into any one area. Participants tour the main HR functions: workforce planning and hiring, onboarding, compensation and benefits, policies and handbooks, recordkeeping, performance, employee relations, and separations. For each, they discuss what good practice looks like in a small organization and where common mistakes happen. A self-assessment exercise helps participants rate their own organization's HR practices and pick the gaps that matter most. Case discussions explore situations like an inconsistent policy, a missing personnel file, and an employee complaint. Participants also map when to involve legal counsel, payroll providers, or other specialists. Each person leaves with a prioritized HR improvement list.
