Why It Matters

People starting their careers often have to learn unwritten workplace rules at the same time as the job itself: how to ask for help, what professional communication looks like, how feedback works. Without guidance, small missteps get read as poor attitude, and promising hires leave early. Thoughtful onboarding closes that gap. Early-career employees build confidence and skills faster, managers spend less time on avoidable problems, and organizations develop a pipeline of future talent.

Course Description

Building on general onboarding practice, this course focuses on what early-career employees specifically need. Participants examine the first weeks through the eyes of an intern or first-job hire and list the unwritten rules that trip people up. They then design ways to make those norms explicit, from communication expectations to how to ask questions. Practice segments cover delivering early feedback that teaches rather than discourages and holding regular check-ins that build confidence. Small groups design a buddy or mentor pairing and an early project that offers real contribution with support. Discussion avoids generational stereotypes and focuses on career stage. Participants leave with an adapted onboarding plan for their early-career hires.
