Social Media in the Workplace

Clear social media norms that protect people and reputation

Why It Matters

A single post can disclose confidential information, upset clients, or spark a public controversy. Employees are often unsure what they can say about their employer, their work, or social and political issues, and managers are unsure how to respond. Clear expectations protect the organization's reputation and client privacy while respecting employees' rights. Staff who understand the norms can share their work proudly and act as positive ambassadors.

Course Description

Participants examine social media from both the employee and the organization perspective. They review the elements of a sound policy, including official versus personal accounts, disclosure of affiliation, confidentiality, client privacy, and personal use during work time, and compare them with their own organization's policy. Scenario discussions explore gray areas: a staff member criticizing a funder, posting photos from a youth program, responding to a negative review, or a complaint going viral. Managers practice handling a policy concern conversation fairly. The course also covers monitoring mentions, escalation paths, and when to involve communications or HR. Participants leave with a checklist for posting about work and, for leaders, a list of policy gaps to address.
