Workplace Safety Fundamentals

Build a safety culture where hazards get reported and fixed

Why It Matters

Injuries hurt people first, and they also bring costs in lost work, claims, turnover, and potential regulatory penalties. Many incidents follow warnings that someone noticed but did not report. Organizations with strong safety cultures treat near misses as information, not blame, and give every employee a clear role. Building that foundation helps employers in offices, warehouses, community sites, and field programs prevent harm and respond consistently when something goes wrong.

Course Description

Participants learn a common language for safety that applies across offices, warehouses, worksites, and community programs. The course introduces major hazard categories, including physical, chemical, biological, ergonomic, and psychosocial, and the hierarchy of controls for reducing risk. Teams practice a simple job hazard analysis on a task from their own workplace. Next, they examine employee and employer rights and responsibilities in general terms and walk through incident and near-miss reporting, including what a useful report contains. Case discussions explore why people stay silent about hazards and what supervisors can do to change that. Participants finish by identifying one safety improvement for their area and how they will raise it.
