Remove waste and reduce errors in everyday processes

Why It Matters

Whether the work is processing applications, answering client requests, or shipping orders, small inefficiencies add up to long waits, frustrated customers, and burned-out staff. Leaders often respond by asking people to work harder. Lean and Six Sigma point attention at the process instead. Teams that learn to see waste and measure variation can make targeted improvements, freeing capacity for more valuable work and giving customers a faster, more reliable experience.

Course Description

This introductory course turns concepts into practice quickly. Participants learn the core ideas of Lean, including value from the customer's perspective and the common types of waste, and of Six Sigma, including variation and data-driven decisions. Teams then map a real process from their workplace, mark delays and rework, and find root causes using tools such as the five whys and fishbone diagrams. The DMAIC cycle of define, measure, analyze, improve, and control provides the structure for planning an improvement. A simple process simulation run in rounds shows how small changes affect flow and quality. Participants leave with a mapped process and an improvement idea ready to test. The course builds a foundation and does not award a belt designation.

Key Focus Areas

Participants explore and practice:

  • Defining value from the customer's point of view

  • Identifying the common types of process waste

  • Mapping a current-state process and spotting bottlenecks

  • Root cause analysis with the five whys and fishbone diagrams

  • Using the DMAIC cycle to structure an improvement effort

Learning Outcomes

Participants will be able to:

  • Map a current-state process and identify waste and delays

  • Apply root cause tools to a recurring process problem

  • Draft an improvement plan structured around DMAIC

  • Select simple measures to track whether a change worked

Who Should Attend

  • Operations and process owners

  • Supervisors of transactional or service teams

  • Program administrators

  • Staff new to continuous improvement
