Why It Matters

Organizations run more of their work as projects: system launches, grant programs, facility moves, events, and process changes. Many are led by people who were never trained as project managers. The results are familiar: scope creep, missed deadlines, overspent budgets, and exhausted teams. A practical, consistent method gives project leads the tools to plan realistically, report status honestly, and make trade-offs early, while giving leadership clearer visibility across the portfolio.

Course Description

Project management is a core Altus service, and this course reflects how projects actually run in agencies, nonprofits, and growing businesses. Participants carry a real or case project through each phase. They write a project charter, break scope into a work breakdown structure, sequence tasks and identify the critical path, and estimate resources and cost. Next they build a risk register, a stakeholder map, and a communication plan. Simulated status meetings introduce change requests, slipping tasks, and stakeholder pressure, and teams decide how to respond. The course closes with closeout and a lessons-learned review. Concepts follow widely used project management practice, and participants leave with a working set of templates for their next project.
