Why It Matters

Every program, project, and operation carries risk: a key vendor fails, a grant requirement is missed, a system goes down, a staff member leaves mid-project. Organizations that discuss risk only after something goes wrong spend more on recovery and lose credibility with funders and partners. A simple, routine approach to risk helps teams anticipate trouble, assign clear ownership, and make informed decisions about which risks to accept and which to reduce.

Course Description

Participants build a working risk register for a project, program, or operational area they know. They practice several identification methods, including structured brainstorming, checklists, assumption reviews, and lessons from past incidents. Next they rate each risk on likelihood and impact, plot results on a heat map, and debate where the organization's risk appetite should draw the line. Teams then choose responses, whether to avoid, reduce, transfer, or accept, and write mitigation actions with owners and triggers. A scenario segment tests the register when a risk actually occurs. Discussion covers making risk reviews a routine part of meetings and reporting. Participants leave with a populated register and a review schedule.
