Life Coaching Essentials
Use coaching questions to clarify goals and move forward
Why It Matters
Many people feel stuck: unsure what they want next, overwhelmed by competing priorities, or repeating plans that never get started. Coaching approaches help by replacing vague intentions with clear questions and small, concrete steps. In workforce and youth programs, staff who use a coaching mindset help participants take ownership of their goals. For individuals, these tools build the habit of reflecting, deciding, and acting with intention.
Course Description
This introductory course draws on widely used coaching approaches without positioning participants as professional coaches. They explore the difference between coaching, mentoring, advising, and counseling, and when each is appropriate. Participants then work through a simple goal-focused conversation structure: where are you now, where do you want to be, what is in the way, and what will you do next? Paired practice lets each person coach and be coached on a real but low-stakes personal or career goal. Additional segments cover open questions, listening without fixing, values clarification, and accountability check-ins. Discussion addresses boundaries, including recognizing when someone needs a referral to a licensed professional. Participants leave with a personal goal plan and a short question bank they can reuse.
