Why It Matters

Hiring managers often skim resumes quickly, and many applications pass through applicant tracking systems first. A resume that lists duties instead of results, or one generic version sent everywhere, rarely makes it through. For job seekers, a strong resume is the ticket to an interview. For workforce programs and employer partners, participants with polished, targeted resumes move into placement more smoothly and reflect well on the program.

Course Description

This is a working session, not a lecture. Participants arrive with a current resume or the raw material for one, and spend most of the course revising it. Short teaching segments cover format choices, contact details, summaries, and how applicant tracking systems scan for keywords. The core exercise turns duty statements into accomplishment statements using action verbs and, where possible, numbers. Participants with limited work history learn to present school projects, volunteer roles, program experience, and transferable skills. Each person then tailors their resume to a real job posting, comparing language and priorities line by line. Peer review and facilitator feedback catch errors and weak spots. Participants leave with a revised resume, a tailored version, and a checklist for future applications.
