Social Intelligence
Read the room and work effectively within group dynamics
Why It Matters
Many workplace missteps are not about skill or intent. They come from misreading a situation: pushing an idea after the room has moved on, missing tension between two colleagues, or ignoring unwritten norms in a new team. People with strong social intelligence anticipate reactions, earn influence, and help groups function. Organizations benefit from smoother meetings, better cross-team collaboration, and leaders who sense problems before they escalate.
Course Description
The course focuses on groups and situations rather than individual emotions. Participants practice situational awareness: observing who speaks, who defers, where energy rises or drops, and what the unwritten rules are. They then study common group dynamics, including in-groups, informal leaders, coalitions, and silent dissent, using case scenarios drawn from meetings, projects, and partner settings. Exercises cover entering a new team, contributing at the right moment in a discussion, and adjusting style across formal and informal settings. A segment on influence explores credibility, reciprocity, and how to bring a skeptical group along. Participants also discuss the line between reading people and manipulating them. Each person analyzes a real group they belong to and chooses one adjustment to try.
