Why It Matters

Policy changes, shifting funder priorities, new competitors, demographic change, and technology all reshape what an organization can and should do. Teams that plan only from internal data get caught off guard. A disciplined environmental scan gives leaders an evidence base for strategic planning, grant positioning, and program design. It also builds a shared understanding among staff and board members of the forces at work, which makes hard choices easier to explain.

Course Description

Participants conduct a scan on their own organization or sector. They start by setting scope and key questions, then use a PESTLE framework to organize trends, drawing on public data, sector reports, stakeholder interviews, and funding announcements. Teams then map stakeholders by influence and interest and chart the funding landscape, noting where money is growing, shrinking, or shifting. The most important step comes next: sorting findings by likelihood and impact and translating them into opportunities, threats, and questions for leadership. Participants practice presenting a short scan briefing to a mock leadership team. They leave with a scan template, a source list, and a plan for keeping the scan current.
