Why It Matters

Formal training covers only a fraction of what employees need to know. The rest comes from watching colleagues, asking questions, and swapping tips, often by chance. When that informal learning is left to luck, new staff struggle and good practices stay isolated in one team. Organizations that support social learning shorten ramp-up time, build connections across silos, and make better use of the expertise they already pay for.

Course Description

Participants explore how people learn through observation, conversation, and collaboration, and how organizations can encourage it without forcing it. They map where learning already happens informally on their team and where it gets blocked. Design work follows: participants plan a peer learning structure suited to their context, such as learning circles, peer coaching pairs, a community of practice, or a working-out-loud channel on a collaboration platform. Discussion covers the community manager role, keeping participation going after launch, psychological safety, and judging whether social learning is helping. Peers review each design and suggest improvements. Participants leave with a launch plan for one social learning initiative.
