Why It Matters

Employers frequently describe a familiar gap: new hires bring technical knowledge but struggle with communication, reliability, teamwork, and handling feedback. Those gaps affect who stays and who advances. Workforce programs and employers both benefit from a shared language for what job-ready looks like. For emerging talent, naming these skills makes them easier to build and easier to describe in an interview, turning everyday experience into evidence.

Course Description

Designed as a survey course, this program introduces ten skills that employers value across industries: communication, teamwork, problem solving, adaptability, time management, work ethic, professionalism, critical thinking, accepting feedback, and leadership. For each, participants see what it looks like on the job, rate themselves through a simple self-check, and complete a short practice activity. Examples include a group problem-solving challenge, a feedback role play, and a scenario on managing competing deadlines. Discussion connects each skill to interviews, so participants can describe their strengths with examples. Workforce and youth programs can use the course as an orientation to job readiness, while employers can use it to set shared expectations for new hires. Participants pick two skills to develop and plan how to practice them.
